New Method to Publish Mom's Book

Hi,
I finally gave up after lots of attempts to make the files I saved in Google post to this Blog. So here is what will work.

1) Printing the book: You are welcome to print the pages from My Google Documents application, the link below will take you to the folder where you will find all the pages I have scanned and currently have available in electronic form.

2) Reading the book: You may find the book created as a photo album for easy viewing on Facebook. The account is open to everyone and is listed under my Mother's name, Marilyn Walling- you'll see her photo there. Go to the photos and when you double click the photos open up large enough to read the book and the click to turn the page.

Walling Family History

Well, thank you for the many ideas. I do not have the ability to create a file from scanner to PDF. I am still experimenting. I have been so caught up in the holidays I have not been on task, but back to it soon.

Happy Holidays and a great New Year to everyone!

How to publish Walling Family History?

OK, so the books are broken and are easy to scan. Tried some test pages. But loading them into Google docs may not work. They are the wrong size for webpages, and as published, not sure the pages can be printed into book form (should anyone want a copy or selected chapters). I am scanning each individual page as a JPEG. I could publish as photo albums on Facebook, but then how could someone print them out into books? Back to the drawing board as they say.

Action List for Walling Family History

OK, Mom doesn't remember even doing the research, let alone her books. So, I will be working from her hard copy volumes. Now for action items to make her information available.

  1. Disassemble books- clip with bulldog clasp when not in use
  2. Scan Table of Contents and a few pages
  3. Create docs: each image will become a google document. Images can be cropped and pasted. Important text will be typed into the doc so hyperlinking can be achieved between documents
  4. Run test, work out any issues
  5. Twitter and hit blogs to solicit feedback and advice
  6. Determine best method for scanning pages- be sure numbers of images correspond to page numbers in book
  7. Plan most important hyperlink strategies
  8. Draft order of publication- lineage pages first, lists of allied families, references, and sources of research and information...then the rest, possibly revise this initial list
  9. Mark pages for first publication group, time activities
  10. Establish a realistic timeline, including milestones
  11. Draft calendar for first month, and continue with a monthly review and scheduling of upcoming month's work
  12. When first milestone is reached, determine what the celebration will be and how each successive milestone will be announced/ celebrated

Walling Family History Project Plan

  • I am publishing all my mother's research on the Walling Family (her lineage).
  • I plan to use Google Documents with links from my Blog, see my first post titled Beginning My Walling Blog*

You are welcome to check out what I am doing from time to time. This is going to be a very long haul. My sister thinks Mom doesn't have any of her original digital materials. But we each have a nice 2 volume set of books. Just like you find at the library. Problem was Mom couldn't afford to publish enough to gift them to the 33 libraries and research centers she used.

I also have an invite and am now a member of the Walling page at groups.ancestory.com

Please feel free to leave messages on my Blog pertaining to Walling genealogy.

*I already have copied Mom's quick reference that is glued in the cover of volume one. Find the underlined words, then click, they are hyperlinked.

Beginning My Walling Blog

I have contacted several people who are descendants of Ralph and Joyce Wallen who arrived in Plymouth Colony aboard the ship Anne from England 1623 on July 10th.

I have created a document which lists the family lineage.

This blog will record my work.
